Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, or OMS as it is more commonly known, is a specialization within dentristry practice and medicine that focuses on surgery of the face, mouth and jaws.
To become an OMS practitioner requires both degrees in Dentistry as well as Medicine, as well as at least one full year's experience in surgery in general (SIG) rotations.
Many acute dental conditions are borne from genetic or acquired abnormalities to the face, mouth or jaws more generally, hence the need for this highly specialized field of treatment.
OMS can involve such surgeries as wisdom teeth and dento-alveolar surgery, corrective jaw surgery, dental implants, cleft lip and palate surgery, cosmetic surgery and the treatment of such disorders as obstructive sleep apnoea, temporomandibular joint disorders, salivary glad disease and cancers of the head or neck.
Whether OMS is appropriate for someone is a matter for discussion with their doctors.
